Valentine's Lament

from Retro by Time Baby

/

about

When I wrote "Valentine's Lament," I was just starting to come out of my phase of writing songs that were pretty, but virtually meaningless. About half-way through this song, I think I decided to start trying to make sense, and still haven't looked back.

lyrics

This should have lasted longer
Blue-gray sky and sheets and wonders
Not the welcome I expected

But then you realize the books are gone
And all that you can do is make your own

An electromagnetic haze
Fell like snow on the streets where we played
And crawling lost in the drifts we realized

That tiny worlds like ours are damned
To repeat the same collapse
Over and over, hand in hand
Until we’ve forgotten how to stand

So I sent a valentine out to all those who long
But who know they can never go home again
And seeking their solace in stripping destruction
Deny all the beauty in the world they can access

And oh…how I loved you in spite of this

So my memories of you
Will be tied to the nastiest weather
But what comes with the sunshine that always follows?
