Patient Creation

from Retro by Time Baby

about

Having recently gone through a bad break-up, I decided the best revenge was to write a song comparing the failed relationship to William Paley's terrible "watchmaker" argument for natural theology. Silly as it was, it was pretty therapeutic.

lyrics

If it wasn’t so convincing
To fiction-raised children like me,
Watchmaker,
I would have come to doubt your story long ago
But I’m trained to look for resolution

Where even the work of scientists
Can’t completely debunk all the myths

Just think of all the years it took
To get me where you wanted
Your patient creation
Waiting for your blessings
And through the sun and snow
Of a world you didn’t even make
I longed for you
But so much for theology

And so I sift through gears and springs
Trying to find an answer
Some microcosm to believe in
And if I uncover all the fallacies inherent
Well, maybe I can still accept you

Because this love, as I see it,
Is more a case of faith than logic

Just think of all the years it took
To get me where you wanted
Your patient creation
Waiting for your blessings
And through the sun and snow
Of a world you didn’t even make
I longed for you
But so much for theology

And how much evidence will we require
Before we finally change the story

Just think of all the years it took
To get me where you wanted
Your patient creation
Waiting for your blessings
And through the sun and snow
Of a world you didn’t even make
I longed for you
But so much for theology
